Localrent is an aggregator of small local car rental companies, and that sentence is the whole product. It does not list Hertz or Avis. It finds firms that operate in one city, often a family business with a single office and a few dozen cars, checks them, and tracks their quality against customer feedback. If you are travelling to Georgia, Albania, Montenegro, Morocco or coastal Turkey and want the price a local pays, this is the machinery for that. If you want a branded counter inside the terminal with a known service script, you are looking at the wrong category.

Where it actually reaches

Coverage spans more than 60 destinations across Europe, Asia and Africa, and the distribution of cars tells you where the platform is genuinely strong rather than merely present. Turkey lists over 4,000 vehicles, Georgia around 2,700, Cyprus and Albania around 2,000 each, Morocco around 2,000, Montenegro around 1,900, Thailand around 1,650, Greece around 1,550 and Spain around 1,350. Alongside those sit smaller but real inventories in Iceland, Italy, Portugal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Seychelles, Mauritius, the UAE, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Jordan. Money: the advance, the deposit, the cancellation

Booking takes an advance payment of 15 to 20 percent of the rental cost. The remainder goes to the rental agent when you pick the car up, by whichever methods that agent accepts, listed per vehicle. Deposits average 300 euros, and the platform states that plenty of its rental companies require no deposit at all. Compared with a chain counter blocking an excess plus fuel on a credit card, that is a different financial shape entirely, and it is the main reason travellers without a high-limit credit card end up here.

Cancellation is the trade-off. You can cancel without penalty no later than 7 days before the rental starts, or 30 days for luxury cars and convertibles, or 24 hours for any category if the booking includes the optional Free cancellation feature. Cancel later than that and the advance is retained in full, and a no-show is treated as a late cancellation. Even a timely cancellation carries a 6 percent payment service fee on the amount paid, with the refund issued within 14 days to the original account (checked August 2026).

Insurance, documents and the local rules

Third party liability and collision damage waiver cover are offered, with standard insurance excluding wheels, undercarriage, windscreen and interior, the same exclusions that catch people out at chain counters. In an insured event you must notify the rental agent immediately and obtain a police report, and failing to do so voids the cover.

Documents required are an original passport and national driving licence, with an International Driving Permit recommended and in some countries required. Copies and electronic licences are not accepted. Minimum driver age and minimum driving experience are set per car rather than per country, and shown on each vehicle page, which is unusually granular. Some rental companies require a physical embossed credit card in the main driver's name; where a debit card is accepted, it must also be physical, personalised and embossed.

Country terms carry real operational constraints. Greek listings, for instance, restrict cars to paved public roads, prohibit crossing the national border, require prior arrangement for island ferries, and make fuel, parking, fines and tolls the renter's responsibility. All of that is published before you book rather than discovered at the desk.

Who it fits

Localrent fits a traveller heading to the Balkans, the Caucasus, North Africa, a Mediterranean island or Southeast Asia, who wants a low deposit, a small amount of money committed in advance, and the price a local operator charges. It fits people who would rather deal with the owner of the company than a rota of counter staff, and it fits anyone whose card cannot absorb a 1,000 euro hold.

It fits less well when plans are unstable, since the free cancellation window is measured in days rather than hours, or when the itinerary crosses borders, which many local operators simply do not allow. In both cases a major-brand broker is the structure built for it.
