What Bubble Is Built For

Bubble is a no-code platform for building full web applications in a visual editor rather than in a code base. The documentation describes the editor as offering "100% WYSIWYG tools to draw your app on an empty canvas and preview the design immediately", and states that "the layout and elements you arrange in the editor look and behave the same way when previewed or deployed live". The canvas is the application, not a mockup of one.

It helps to place Bubble against its neighbours. Webflow, Squarespace and Wix are site builders, and they win when the deliverable is content and design. Softr and Glide put an interface on top of a data source you keep somewhere else. Bubble sits further along, bringing the database, the interface and the logic under one roof, which is the right trade when what you are building has accounts, records and permissions rather than pages.

The Design Layer

Elements are the building blocks: input fields, buttons, images, checkboxes, calendars and icons, all placed directly on the page rather than written in code. Bubble documents a responsive engine that "ensures that your app looks and behaves well on different devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers", so "setting up a responsive design eliminates the need to create separate versions of a website for different devices". For consistency at scale, the Styles feature lets you "save stylesheets that can be applied to multiple elements and be controlled from one central place", while Font and Color variables push a design change across an entire application from one definition.

The Data Layer

Bubble ships a managed database rather than asking you to provision one, and the documentation states that the platform "handles most aspects of database management for you". Two databases run per application, one for development and one for live users, operating entirely independently, so test records never leak into production reporting.

Data falls into three categories: dynamic data that users create and search, temporary data held in custom states and URL parameters during a session, and static data handled through App texts for translations and Option sets for fixed lists.

Security is documented rather than implied. Encryption at rest is provided through AWS RDS using AES-256, and data in transit uses "TLS (Transport Layer Security)". Bubble also documents "Point-in-time backups" and regular "vulnerability testing". Privacy Rules secure "user data based on who is trying to access it" rather than trusting the front end to hide fields.

Logic and Workflows

A workflow combines "an event that triggers one or more actions". Events include button clicks, input changes, conditions being met, user authentication and database modifications. Actions cover "Creating, updating and deleting things in your database" as well as displaying elements, managing accounts, sending communications and calling plugins. Workflows can be colour coded and grouped into folders, which matters once an application carries a few hundred of them.

Two documented behaviours shape how experienced builders structure things. Error handling is fail-stop: when a workflow hits an error "it will stop running on the action where the error happened", which makes action ordering a deliberate decision. And the client-side action for editing many records at once is documented as working efficiently up to 1,000 records, with backend operations recommended past that point, so front-end workflows handle the user journey and backend workflows handle bulk work.

How Bubble Prices Runtime

Bubble bills runtime in workload units, defined as representing "the server resources needed to host, run, and scale apps built on Bubble". This replaced an older capacity model under which "apps slowed down when they exceeded the capacity limit", and Bubble now states that "workload is not a shared or scarce resource". Rather than throttling a busy application, the platform lets you "Add more workload easily with pay-as-you-go workload overages or purchase a workload subscription for a volume discount".

Hosting cost therefore tracks real usage instead of a guessed server size, and you hold a switch over which direction that goes. Notifications arrive at 75 percent of the monthly allowance and again at 100 percent. Leave overages enabled and the application keeps serving traffic while you pay for the excess. Turn them off and you have a hard ceiling on spend instead. Which setting is correct depends on whether an unexpected spike is revenue.

Bubble publishes three plan tracks. On the web-only track, Starter is $32 per month billed monthly or $29 billed annually, Growth is $134 or $119, and Team is $399 or $349. The mobile-only track runs $49 or $42, $199 or $169, and $529 or $449. The combined web and mobile track runs $69 or $59, $249 or $209, and $649 or $549.

Bandwidth is tiered at 100 GB on Starter, 500 GB on Growth and 1 TB on Team. Mobile builds are more generous in the first three months while you iterate toward a store release: 10 then 5 on Starter, 15 then 10 on Growth, 25 then 20 on Team. Without a workload tier subscription, the pay-as-you-go overage rate is $0.30 per 1,000 workload units.

Who It Suits

Bubble suits the operator or small team that needs a genuine application with accounts, records and permissions, and would otherwise spend months and a developer budget reaching a first version. If the deliverable is a marketing site, Webflow or Squarespace get you there faster. If your data already lives in Airtable and you only need a front end over it, Softr or Glide are a shorter path. If you already have engineers, a framework gives you more room. Bubble earns the middle of that spectrum, where the ambition is real software and the team is small.

Should You Build It in Bubble?

The honest test is not whether Bubble can build what you have in mind. It usually can. The test is whether what you have in mind is an application or a website, because that answer decides which tool saves you the most time.

If the deliverable is pages, a site builder is the shorter road. Webflow gives you finer control over layout and typography, and Squarespace or Wix will have a marketing site live in an afternoon. If your data already sits in Airtable and you only need a clean interface over it, Softr and Glide do that specific job with far less setup. None of those are compromises when the job matches them.

Bubble becomes the right answer the moment your idea has users who log in, records that belong to specific people, and rules about who may see what. That is where site builders stop and where the visual editor, the managed database and Privacy Rules start earning their keep together. Getting all three from one vendor is a real advantage for a small team, because there is no integration layer to maintain between them.

That metering deserves one decision up front rather than a surprise later. With overages enabled your application keeps serving traffic during a spike and you pay for the excess at a documented $0.30 per 1,000 workload units. With overages disabled you get a hard spending ceiling instead. Bubble emails you at 75 percent and at 100 percent of the allowance either way. Pick the setting that matches your business: a consumer app where a traffic spike is revenue wants overages on, an internal tool with a fixed budget does not.

The Verdict

Bubble is a serious platform for people who need real software and do not have an engineering team to build it. Come to it with an application in mind, size the workload before launch rather than after, and it will take you further than any page builder will. Come to it for a marketing site and you will have bought more machinery than the job requires.
